Happy First Day of Spring! You know it’s going to be good day when you wake up to find blue skies, sunshine, and fresh snow on the North Shore mountains. It’s such a phenomenal first day of spring in Vancouver, this is what English Bay looks like from the KatKam web cam right now:
The cherry blossoms in my East Van neighbourhood are only starting to show their buds, and the magnolias are emerging from their slumber, but you can tell that it’s full-on spring. There’s that feeling in the air right now that tingles the senses, and with the days getting longer, everyone will be outside, embracing all that the season has to offer.
Elsewhere in Canada, I’ve come to realize, spring is merely a figment of the imagination. A few weeks in May, I’ve heard, when the dirty winter snow melts, when the green leaves emerge and it instantly becomes summer. In Vancouver, spring begins in February with the earliest of flowers, and trickles down through March, April and May, showering us with snowdrops, crocus, cherry blossoms, daffodils, tulips. It’s possibly one of the most delightful times of the year to be here.
Over the next few days I’ll be meandering around Vancouver, camera in hand, trying to capture that magic.
